Door Inside
Charlotte Koenka/2024/Netherlands/22 min.
Director Charlotte Koenka delves into the intricate tapestry of indie classical performer Brendan J. Walsh’s creative and personal journey. Spanning over two years, the documentary weaves a close-knit narrative through intimate conversations that unveil Walsh’s multifaceted persona and familial intricacies and reflect a profound exploration of relationships set against the backdrop of music. Stemming from a dialogue between friends, the project blossoms into a vulnerable and revealing exploration, with Koenka steering the narrative to capture Walsh’s essence—both as a musician and an individual. This journey of vulnerability, underpinned by mutual trust and growth, mirrors the evolving dynamics between the filmmaker and her subject, offering a raw and emotive glimpse into the soul of an artist.
If the Clouds Fall
Cleo Julio Mulllis/2023/Netherlands/24 min.
A short documentary that follows the young artist Damy, known as one of the rappers in the hip-hop group Black Acid. Four years ago, he lost his best friend and most loyal fan, Rens, to suicide, and guilt prevented him from attending the funeral. Struggling with regret and shame, he could no longer make music and descended into a pit of darkness. After he meets with his father for the first time in a while, something changes. A solo debut EP is born, and light is slowly on the horizon. Through intimate conversations and studio sessions, we see Dany’s inner thoughts. The film shows us how music can help us find a place for difficult aspects of life.
Synthesis
Jim Brink/2024/Netherlands/18 min.
A short poetic documentary about two young musicians who went out to battle the Wadden Sea on a sailboat to capture the grand, deep sounds of nature. This is in contrast to the search for the same deep sound within the machine’s counterpart, unwieldy analog synthesizers. This film is about the brotherhood of two artists and the differences and similarities between the natural and synthetic sound worlds.
