Grace Jones: bloodlight and bami

Looking Back: 5 Years of IN-EDIT

Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami

Sophie Fiennes | 2017 | UK, Ireland | 115 min. | English w. Dutch subtitles

We start off with a film that is very dear to us. This electrifying journey through the public and private worlds of pop culture mega-icon Grace Jones is the first film IN-EDIT NL ever screened. To please our nostalgic hearts, we’re bringing it back to the big screen one more time in a special retrospective programme. The film contrasts musical sequences with intimate personal footage, all the while brimming with Jones’s bold aesthetic. A larger-than-life entertainer, an androgynous glam-pop diva, an unpredictable media presence – Grace Jones is all these things and more. Sophie Fiennes’s documentary goes beyond the traditional music biography, offering a portrait as stylish and unconventional as its subject.

Thelonious Monk: rewind and play

Dutch Premiere

Thelonious Monk: Rewind & Replay

Alain Gomis | 2022 | Germany, France | 65 min

In December 1969, legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk ended his European concert tour with a performance at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Before the show, he was invited to appear on a French television program to perform and answer questions in an intimate setting. Using newly discovered footage from this recording, director Alain Gomis reveals the disconnect between Monk and his interviewer, Henri Renaud, whose unwittingly trivializing approach conveys the casual racism and exploitation prevalent in the music industry at large. A fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary with extraordinary rarely-seen performances, REWIND & PLAY offers a unique opportunity to see Monk in a way that very few people did.

Marcos Cabotá | 2022 | Spain, USA | 95 min

Bruce Swedien was probably the best sound engineer in history, having worked on recordings by jazz giants such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie or Dizzy Gillespie. This is the gripping story of how, in 1982, with the record industry in free fall, he worked his magic to save none other than Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones’ Thriller, the best-selling album in history.

Jura Capela | 2022 | Brazil | 101 min

The film captures the free-thinking spirit of the manguebit movement through a multifaceted language that reflects the daring and innovation that characterized the movement. The film’s imagery features a striking symbol of the movement: a parabolic antenna buried in the mud of the estuaries. Through this symbol, the film highlights the manguebit’s embrace of technology and the importance of the natural environment to the culture of the region.

CAN and Me

Dutch Premiere

CAN and Me

Michael P. Aust | 2022 | Germany | 90 min

What does ‘sound’ mean? What does ‘silence’ mean? An intimate presentation of the life and work of Irmin Schmidt, founder of the German band CAN, whose individual style shaped generations of musicians in pop and electronic music. The film follows his path from being a classical conductor to being a pupil of famous composers Karl-Heinz Stockhausen and György Ligeti, from CAN, his work on film scores, opera, and finally, his love for electronic club music. The film thrives especially on its cinematic value, embedding footage of a time that now, with its inclination to eccentricity and musical adventures, seems colourful and crazy.

Bring Minyo Back

EU Premiere

Yuji Moriwaki | 2022 | Japan | 83 min

A documentary about Minyo featuring the band Minyo Crusaders. Minyo is Japanese traditional folk music, a genre at risk of extinction. For many Japanese, Minyo is “lost music.” Minyo Crusaders are a Tokyo-based band that mixes Minyo from all over Japan with Latin and Afro flavours in unique arrangements. They have also toured in Colombia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In Colombia, they created an updated version of “Minyo” with Frente Cumbiero.

Lee Fields: Faithful Man

Lee Fields Faithful Man

Jessamyn Ansary, Joyce Mishaan | 2022 | United States | 80 min

Listening to the soul sounds coming through his transistor radio in the late fifties and early sixties, Lee was hooked. Through the seventies, he made his living touring the legendary Chitlin’ Circuit alongside some of the greatest names in blues and soul history. He landed a gig with Kool and the Gang before their rise to fame. But, as the seventies came to a close, disco began its reign and Lee’s soul career plummeted. Due to a very successful and sold out screening that we organised last Saturday, we’ve decided to screen the film one more time during the festival. Missed it? this is your one time to catch it again!

Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande

Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande

Tim MacKenzie-Smith | 2022 | UK | 89 min

The tale of how, in the early 70’s some friends from Brixton, originally from former English colonies like Jamaica and Guyana, developed a sophisticated funk-rock sound with African roots that was utterly unique. And they bequeathed drum breaks and bass lines that would pollinate the disco, hip-hop and house scenes and that day after day, garner new fans.
