Niels Smit Duyzentkunst from Oostum is the spiritual father of the ZomerJazzFietsTour. This bike tour near the city of Groningen (following the banks of the Reitdiep) has been held since 1987 on the last Saturday of August. During the Tour, Jazz musicians play in the barns and churches of Groningen stiff farmers that do not seem to be into music that much. Appearences are deceptive, though.

Open the Gate

In 1986, the heavy metal band Vortex is the first band from Groningen to shoot a music video of their single ‘Open the Gate’. Vortex is already such a strange duck in Groningen, with their theatrical appearance, make-up and fake blood. Yet the idiosyncratic boys of Vortex do not care about anything at all. Thirty years later, Jurjen and Martjo look back at the origin of the song that has become their favorite. To this day ‘Open the Gate’ has to be played at every concert. A Rockumentary about how a song becomes a classic, about how just being crazy is not enough, and about always doing what you like.

Always a storyteller in anything he does, actor, performer and writer Danny Butler thrives on visuals, ideas and unusual perspectives. A unique subject looks better against a clichéd background and vice versa.
Happily blurring the line between acting and presenting, Danny also likes to on voice acting jobs, sometimes taking on different roles in one production. He enjoys taking on new challenges. Anything to keep the voice flexible.
As a presenter, Danny brings together thorough preparation and improvisation. When everything falls apart, you make that the art. There are worlds to be explored.
