My Darling Vivian

My Darling Vivian

Director: Matt Riddlehoover
USA / 90 min. / 2020 / English

My Darling Vivian traces the romantic, wrenching, and dizzying journey of Vivian Liberto, Johnny Cash’s first wife and the mother of his four daughters – a woman with an immensely tumultuous life, forced to live under Cash’s shadow.

The 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line chronicled the turbulent life of the country legend with a particular focus on his relationship with June Carter. But in order to create the mythos of June as his savior, it offered viewers a very unflattering depiction of Vivian, who was married with Cash for 13 years. As a result, her public image boiled down to someone who was little more than an unsupportive nag in Cash’s life. Funnily enough, Cash wrote “Walk the Line” about her.

My Darling Vivian is here to rectify these faults and give space to Cash’s four daughters to share first-hand, and for the first time, the entire story of love, isolation, fear, heartbreak, and survival. The film has exclusive, unprecedented access to never-before-seen footage and photographs, as well as to Vivian and Johnny’s daughters themselves.
