Line Katcho is a Montréal composer and audiovisual artist primarily interested in sound and image as demonstrations of kinetic matter: gestures, forces, or motion—she distinguishes herself by her experimental approach and affinity for perceptual playfulness, as well as a profound talent with affect.

In this talk, we will look at the more practical and technical aspect of archival material. The speakers give their take on the theme, including tips and advice from their perspective and expertise. 

Beeld en Geluid is presenting an insight for filmmakers to the use of their visual and audio archive, with an extra attention to music documentary. Harry van Biessum will discuss how the use of copyrighted archival material and licenses can be used safely. Accompanied by a twist on the use of archive from an educational perspective by Kristina Petrasova.

Master Talk

Prolific music documentary filmmaker Frank Scheffer will join us for a conversation about his longstanding career. He’s been no stranger to the use of archival material in music documentary. Combining archival material together with filmed conversations have lead to layered and enticing documentary portraits. 

Frank Scheffer is a Dutch cinematographer and producer of documentary film, mostly known for his work Conducting Mahler on the 1995 Mahler Festival in Amsterdam with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Riccardo Muti and Simon Rattle. Since his first film, Zoetrope People, devoted to Francis Ford Coppola, which includes long sequences with the singer Tom Waits, music is a constant in his filmography.

His documentary portraits and experimental films about key figures such as Frank Zappa, Elliott Carter, Pierre Boulez, Gustav Mahler, Brian Eno, Igor Stravinsky, Steve Reich and and Philip Glass a veritable panorama of 20th century music. We will go over a life committed to portray music.
