From a rebellious underground genre in the post-Soviet states to the main export product in Scandinavia, it is undeniable that metal is a popular music genre. How come this heavy sound is experienced so differently by distinct cultures within Europe? This is the story behind the music, the story of where the social and cultural differences come from that have given shape to the contemporary European metal scene. Go backstage on an epic road trip across Europe in search for the stories of those who bring the music to life.
Daan van Houten. “Ever since I got my first electric guitar as a teenager, I have been involved with heavy music. In recent years I have been most active with the drone outfit Project Nefast, which strangely became part of the vibrant Utrecht black metal scene. I work in advertising, so understanding (sub)cultures and people’s quirks are part of my daily job. Hence I am looking forward to discussing the filmmakers’ findings.”
